Ludwig van Beethoven’s second piano concerto is not generally known as being part of a modern concert pianist’s repertoire. The Tonkunstler are all the more pleased to perform the piece together with exceptional artist Lars Vogt, who counts among the leading piano virtuosos of his generation. The delightful work took some time in the making and underwent several rewritings, and, incidentally, it does entirely without timpani and trumpets. The fifth symphony by Gustav Mahler was also reworked several times. «The Fifth is a cursed work. Nobody understands it», Mahler complained in 1905 after an unsuccessful performance in Hamburg. This was to change: the gentle Adagietto has become one of the most popular compositions of the fin-de-siècle master, not least on account of it being the opening music in Luchino Visconti’s legendary film version of Thomas Mann’s «Death in Venice» from 1971.
