  • Alina Pogostkina, violin
  • Michal Nesterowicz, conductor

What is it really, this tenth symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich, in which his biographer Solomon Volkov saw «the terrible face of Stalin»? The psychological profile of a driven man? A «picture of madness»? A reckoning with one of the most brutal dictators in history? Shostakovich’s «Tenth», premiered in Leningrad only a few months after Josef Stalin’s death, takes as its subject the liberation of the human spirit and the artist’s right to independence. The Polish composer Witold Lutosławski suffered, like Shostakovich, under the tribulations of the Stalinist regime. His spirited «Little Suite» has been chosen by the Tonkunstler Orchestra and Polish conductor Michał Nesterowicz to open the evening. Afterwards, Alina Pogostkina, one of today’s most successful young violin virtuosi, will take to the stage. The St. Petersburg-born star will perform the solo part in the Violin Concerto in A minor by her compatriot Alexander Glazunov, one of the last great exemplars of the late Romantic genre.
