Leoš Janáček’s «The Cunning Little Vixen», which is among the most-performed operas of the 20th century, was a tremendous success at the Vienna State Opera in June 2014. Opening the subscription concert, the suite from this enchanting musical fairy tale will be conducted by Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska. This will be followed by the multi award-winning French harpist Xavier de Maistre playing the solo part in one of the rare works for harp and orchestra: the harp concerto by Einojuhani Rautavaara, one of Finland’s most eminent composers, which premièred in 2000. The composition in the traditional style has since become very popular and will be performed for the first time in Austria by the Tonkunstler Orchestra. The performance of Robert Schumann’s Third Symphony promises Rhenish gaiety. It is testimony to the composer’s joy of a fresh start after moving from Dresden to Düsseldorf. However, the epithet «Rheinische» was not added by Schumann himself.
