This ballet from Monte Carlo oscillates between dream and reality: choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot uses all his skill as an interpreter of fairy tales to create a vivid production of Cendrillon experienced through the emotional world of the title heroine. He tells a moving story laden with symbolism about deep and conflicted emotions, about pain, forgetting and joy. In the process he strips the material of all ostentation and Disney-like kitsch. His contemporary account abandons the black-and-white thinking of the fairy tale world and exposes the complexity of emotions in all their enigmatic beauty.
