Programmes

When asked what he considered his most important character trait, Joaquín Rodrigo once answered his nature as a dreamer – and his music certainly invites us to dream, especially in the slow movement of the famous «Concierto de Aranjuez». Inspired by personal memories of the splendid gardens of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, the dance-like first and final movements convey something of courtly ceremony and spirited joy, while the elegaic Adagio evokes the «Saeta», an Andalusian song of entreaty and prayer closely related to Flamenco, sung as a heart-rending, sometimes also deafening, threnody during Holy Week. Pablo Sáinz Villegas, the «soul of Spanish guitar», is the soloist in this popular central piece in a concert under the baton of award-winning young Taiwanese conductor Tung-Chieh Chuang. It will be bookended by Gabriel Fauré’s elegaic «Pavane» and Franz Schubert’s rousing Third Symphony, full of carefree youthfulness.
