Christian Jost
«An die Hoffnung» for Tenor and Orchestra after the song by Ludwig van Beethoven op. 94
- interval -

Freedom, fraternity and humanity – this is what Beethoven’s 9th Symphony stands for. It opens the 10th Grafenegg Festival and, as befits Beethoven the great European, the Tonkünstler Orchestra is joined by 22 alumni of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO). Top soloists Klaus Florian Vogt, René Pape, Camilla Nylund and Elena Zhidkova sing the «Ode to Joy», while in Beethoven’s «Coriolan» Overture, it is a ruler’s despair that is the theme. Composer in Residence Christian Jost starts things off with his Fanfare, a commission for the Grafenegg Festival. The premiere of his new work also centres around Beethoven: it features the song «An die Hoffnung» – also sung by Klaus Florian Vogt – and embeds it within Jost’s unique, modern soundscape, connecting past and present. A grand opening for the jubilee: director Michael Sturminger creates a multimedia performance that takes stock of today’s world through the prism of Shakespeare’s sonnet 66th Words, song, theatre, music, fi lm and electronics carry it all to our ears, eyes and hearts. The history of Europe is told in fast-forward and music’s significance as the expression of joyfulness, self-assurance and community is celebrated. Throughout the day, young ensembles from the Grafenwörth Music School bring the castle grounds to life through music.
