Ode to Joy

In February 2016 the Tonkunstler Orchestra first took to the stage with 500 choral singers, conducted by Yutaka Sado: «Seid umschlungen, Millionen» - an extraordinary event in the sold-out Grafenegg Auditorium and reason enough to carry the project over into the other Tonkunstler residencies. So now it's our third Ninth!

Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony exerts a fascination on people all over the world. In Japan, the Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS) has been putting on an annual performance in Osaka with a 10.000-strong choir since 1983; Yutaka Sado has led this project for 18 years. 500 singers, along with existing choirs from Vienna and Lower Austria, have once more been invited to the performance in the Vienna Musikverein. Some have already experienced the symphony's world-embracing spirit at first hand: At MBS's invitation, Austrian singers helped to realise the performance of «10.000 Joy» in Osaka in December 2016.
