Andrés Orozco-Estrada (2009 to 2015)

Andrés Orozco-Estrada is one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation.

He was Music Director of the Tonkunstler Orchestra from the 09-10 to 14-15 concert season. At the beginning of the 2014-15 concert season, he took over as Chief Conductor of the hr-Sinfonieorchester in Frankfurt and as Music Director of the Houston Symphony. In September 2015 he also took up the position of Principal Guest Conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Orozco-Estrada came to international attention in 2004 when he stood in with the Tonkunstler Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. He was celebrated in the press as the “wonder of Vienna” and numerous engagements with international orchestras followed.

Following his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in autumn 2010, Oroczo-Estrada was lauded as a “brilliant stand-in” (Wiener Zeitung) for Esa-Pekka Salonen and an “eminent talent” (Die Presse). In November 2012, Orozco-Estrada stood in for Riccardo Muti with the Vienna Philharmonic and proved himself the “stand-in worth his weight in gold” (Kurier) as well as an “inspired master of communication” (Standard). In January 2015, Orozco-Estrada gave a notable and highly-praised debut at the Salzburg Mozart Week with the Vienna Philharmonic and works by Schubert, Mozart and Elliott Carter.

Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducted his first concert with the Tonkunstler on 8 May 2003 in the main hall at the Radiokulturhaus in Vienna. The concert was organised by the Society for Contemporary Music and the programme included works by Leopold Schmetterer, Maximilian Kreuz, Dietmar Schermann and David Babcock. Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the Tonkunstler Orchestra first performed together at the Vienna Musikverein on 7 June 2004. The programme was Richard Strauss’s “Four Last Songs” – with soprano Eva Mei – and Anton Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, the “Romantic”. Andrés Orozco-Estrada gave his last subscription concert as Music Director of the Tonkunstler on 3 June 2015 at the Vienna Musikverein. They were joined on stage by the Vienna Singverein and outstanding vocal soloists; the programme – as at the preceding concerts in Grafenegg, Vienna and St. Pölten – was Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem “Also sprach Zarathustra”, the “Schicksalslied” by Johannes Brahms and the “Te deum” by Anton Bruckner. On Friday 14 August, Andrés Orozco-Estrada once again took to the podium with the Tonkunstler: opening the 2015 Grafenegg Festival, the Tonkunstler were joined by the Vienna Singverein, the Vienna Boys’ Choir and renowned soloists to perform Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. Audience and orchestra can look forward to another guest appearance by the former Music Director at the next Grafenegg Festival: the reunion will take place on 1 September 2016 at the Wolkenturm.
