An opening of concentrated power: without melody or harmony, but with continuously solidifying rhythm, the orchestra initially hammers out an A some three dozen times – opening the gate to a symphonic world that leaves the listener in a state of astonishment. Monumental waltz sounds, Mahlerian brokenness and even soloists singing without a text combine to form a fascinating whole. With his Third Symphony, performed in 1912 to great successs, the «Sinfonia espansiva», Carl Nielsen managed finally to establish himself – and Michael Schønwandt is today one of his most in-demand interpreters. The symphony is expansive not in length, but because it represents «the extension of the horizon and the expansion of life», in Nielsen’s own words. Antonín Dvořák overcame his own limits in the USA, where some of his most popular works were written – for example, the melancholy, sumptuous Cello Concerto, in which the splendid young cellist Harriet Krijgh will perform the solo part.
Harriet Krijgh has had to cancel her participation in this concert. Fortunately, Andreas Brantelid has agreed to take over the role in Dvořák´s cello concerto.
