Leonard Bernstein
«On the Waterfront» Symphonic Suite for Orchestra
- interval -
Dmitri Schostakowitsch

In the summer of 1959, in the middle of the Cold War, the New York Philharmonic completed a tour directed by Leonard Bernstein throughout the countries of the Eastern Bloc – and played Dmitri Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony in the Soviet Union in the composer’s presence. The work ends with an intentionally radiant, indeed bombastic victory – but this is only the facade that Shostakovich holds up for the regime: behind it, the torments and desperation of a subjugated people emerge. Making these audible is one of the interpreter’s most important duties. Yutaka Sado takes on this work with the Tonkunstler, placing it alongside Bernstein’s own music. After the effervescent champagne mood of the «Candide» overture, the «Serenade» moves into the realms of philosophy: this disguised concerto, with the young violinist Sayaka Shoji as soloist, eloquently and rivetingly develops the discourses on love in Plato’s «Symposium».
