Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of a select group of works in the classical orchestral repertoire that enjoy the greatest popularity and is one of the most-played symphonies of all time. To many, the pounding quavers of the “Fate Motif” are easy to associate with fate knocking on the gates of life. But what is the basis of the work’s popularity? What is the secret of its success? Conductor Jamie Phillips and Österreich 1 radio presenter Albert Hosp join the audience to read the composition’s “blueprint”. With reference to excerpts played live, the musicians of the Tonkunstler Orchestra introduce listeners to Beethoven’s «Fate Symphony» before performing the work in its entirety.
