«The Firebird» Ballet in two scenes (1910)

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has been familiar to audiences at the Festspielhaus for over a decade as the creator of boundary-breaking new dance works. Along with his company Ballet Vlaanderen, which he has led as Artistic Director since 2015, on this occasion the Flemish-Moroccan choreographer presents a contrasting programme of classic fairy-tale works to the sounds of the Tonkunstler Orchestra. Cherkaoui begins by offering new perspectives on the Russian legend of the firebird in ‘L’Oiseau de Feu’. In this non-narrative work, the destructive power of fire provides the focus for an extravagant piece of choreography. In ‘Exhibition’ the playful and fairy-tale elements of Mussorgsky’s famous work are visualised by the ballet director in a poetic staging accompanied by the orchestral version performed the Tonkunstler.
