When Ivor Bolton returns to the Tonkunstler podium with the «German Requiem» by Johannes Brahms, his interpretation is informed not just by operatic experience from his current job as music director of the Teatro Real in Madrid but also by his expertise as a respected advocate of historically informed performance. Instead of setting the Latin requiem to music, Brahms compiled biblical passages to create a work that comforts the bereaved more than it prays for the souls of the dead. Clara Schumann was captivated by its «profound seriousness combined with all the magic of poetry».
