The Tonkunstler and their Music Director Yutaka Sado place three human fates and their moving musical echoes at the start of the new season. In «Halil» – Hebrew for flute – Leonard Bernstein created a memorial to a young Israeli flautist who had been killed in 1973 in the Yom Kippur War. Thomas Larcher composed «Time» after hearing of the cancer diagnosis of his friend, the pianist Lars Vogt who would die in 2022 – and the perception of time is work’s central theme. It’s fitting that Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony with its shattering «fate theme» culminates in a thrillingly celebratory finale: optimism overcomes!
