«In just 50 years his glamour as the most outstanding composer of all time will radiate brightly, while I will mostly be remembered only on account of my G minor Violin Concerto»: Max Bruch’s self-criticism was harsh, exempting only his formidable violin concerto from an oeuvre he saw as otherwise overshadowed by Johannes Brahms. In fact, Brahms is a constant unseen – or unheard – presence throughout this evocative programme. Antonín Dvořák was also in thrall to him, and drew on Brahms’s Second Symphony as the template for his scintillating Sixth. Violinist Benjamin Herzl and conductor Erina Yashima make the case for some less famous masterpieces!
