Programmes

Fanfare for Thomas Bachmair: The first trumpeter of the Tonkunstler Orchestra plays the solo part in Joseph Haydn’s famous concerto in E flat major, an early example of the new kind of composition enabled by the invention of the keyed trumpet in the late 18th century. Haydn’s Symphony No. 97 in C major was an immediate hit at its 1792 premiere in London, so much so that it was performed again the following week. After these acts of reverence to Viennese Classicism, the Tonkunstler Orchestra and Austrian conductor Azis Sadikovic conclude their first symphonic programme together with the folk-inspired «Dances of Galánta» by Zoltán Kodály.

The new rules on Covid-19 prevention have made some changes necessary to our concert programmes. Originally Aaron Copland’s «Appalachian Spring» was programmed for a «HAYDN & COPLAND» evening, but this is replaced here by Zoltán Kodály’s «Dances of Galánta». The planned collaboration with the young American conductor and composer Benjamin P. Wenzelberg will be continued at a later date.
