Programmes

Ruler, icon, scapegoat: In «Marie Antoinette», the renowned French choreographer Thierry Malandain turns to one of the most fascinating and controversial personalities in history. Scene by scene, his richly colourful neoclassical ballet leafs through the turbulent biography of the last queen of France, who behind the pomp and excess is revealed to be a lonely, passionate woman of artistic sensibilities. With impressive precision and much feeling, his ensemble dances an expressive choreography around the music of Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck, both contemporaries of Marie Antoinette. In the Festspielhaus St. Pölten, Malandain’s creation meets the musical virtuosity of the Tonkunstler Orchestra.
