Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
Stabat mater for Soprano, Alto, Strings and Basso continuo

He was widely misunderstood during his lifetime; it is said that once an orange was thrown at his head during a performance. But after Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s premature death, the world learned to love his music. His posthumous fame became so great that works by less successful composers were published and performed under his name. His profound «Stabat mater», which expresses the Virgin Mary’s pain over the death of Jesus, was one of the most popular pieces of the whole 18th century and inspired other composers to create their own adaptations.
