On the banks of the Schreiberbach that runs through the West of Vienna between Grinzing and Nussdorf, Ludwig van Beethoven finds the images and sounds for his Sixth Symphony. He discovers five objects in his picnic basket: a pillow to rest on after his «Arrival in the Country», a telescope for the «Scene by the Stream», a bottle of wine for the «Merry Gathering of Country People», an umbrella for the storm and a lamb for the «Shepherd’s Song». This concert with commentary gives children a considered introduction to a symphonic masterpiece that expresses both nature’s moods of nature and the emotional world of the composer. Once the conductor has settled a heated debate about programme music, the young audience can take even more pleasure in being invited to dance.
