Having caused scandal as a dancer and subsequently become an exceptional choreographer, Marie Chouinard is now regarded as one of the most important representatives of Canadian contemporary dance. For her interpretation of ‘The Rite of Spring’, the French Canadian artist immerses eleven dancing creatures in a mysterious bath of spiritual intimacy, desire and fertility. The accompanying Stravinsky score – performed by the Tonkunstler Orchestra – is reflected by the delicate tonal music of contemporary composer Rober Racine. The second part of the evening is inspired by Henri Michaux’s book ‘Mouvements’. The Belgian surrealist’s cryptic drawings, his 15 page poem and even the afterword have all been transposed into dance by the choreographer, who has transformed them into a hypnotic stage performance by living stick figures.
