«The kettledrums and trumpets have been sounding within me for some days now (trumpet in C)», wrote Robert Schumann in 1845. The result was his Second Symphony, in which he managed to triumphantly free himself from a psychological crisis by returning to Bach and Beethoven. It was a triumph of the melodic and delicate, by contrast, with which Sergey Prokofiev began his First Violin Concerto, a dreamily shimmering, mercurial virtuoso piece – and one that could have been specially composed for the Swiss-Austrian violinist Amia Janicki. At the start, the young Linz-born star Tobias Wögerer presents Franz Schubert’s overture to the theatre music «Die Zauberharfe» («The Magic Harp»): Dramatic seriousness and song-like melodiousness meet the splendour of Italian opera.
