To the soloist in his Second Piano Concerto, Sergey Prokofiev grants precious few breaks; they must prove themselves almost interruptedly with positively acrobatic brilliance – and the development of the whole first movement is a single, gigantic cadenza: undoubtedly a case for the internationally celebrated pianist Andreï Korobeinikov. Hugh Wolff brings one more Russian work with him, Sergei Rachmaninov’s magnificent Symphonic Dances: a disguised last symphony in which the composer makes peace with ghosts of the past. Finally, Joan Towers’s «Sequoia», inspired by the majesty of the giant redwood tree: a breathtaking programme.
