Robert Schumann was already dead by the time Gustav Mahler was born – and yet there still seems to be some direct connection between the two composers. They shared an enthusiasm for poets such as Jean Paul and E.T.A. Hoffmann, who are memorably represented in sound in Mahler’s First Symphony. At the conclusion to the Festival, this initial foray into symphonic composition by Mahler is conducted by a rising star of the classical world: Lorenzo Viotti directs the Tonkunstler Orchestra at the Wolkenturm. Previously, Rudolf Buchbinder will have performed the solo part of Schumann’s Piano Concerto, plunging into the musical cosmos that so fascinated Mahler.
