Three young sailors of the US Navy are given 24 hours’ shore leave in New York and want to flirt with the most beautiful girls in the city. Premiered in 1944 at the old Metropolitan Opera with choreography by Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein’s ballet «Fancy Free» achieved such success that is was promptly developed into the musical «On the Town», which a few years later delighted movie audiences with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra in the main roles. The mercurial freshness of Bernstein’s original ballet music forms the centrepiece of this concert under the baton of versatile American conductor Hugh Wolff who, after the interval, will conduct Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, a work of unburdened, joyous and humourous character, which breaks new ground in each movement. But first the opening: commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, the Australian composer Brett Dean has created a musical memorial to the cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, who died in a spacecraft accident in 1967.
