Leonard Bernstein once said that no other composer had spoken so directly to so many people as Beethoven – whether they be young or old, educated or uninformed, cultivated or naive. Bernstein wrote vinyl history with his cycle of the Beethoven symphonies recorded in Vienna and tackled the piano concerti many times as a conductor and soloist. With Yutaka Sado, the Tonkunstler will interpret the mature showpiece of the concerti, that is, the Fifth in E-flat Major, as well as the solemnly tense, brilliant Second Symphony in D Major, whose introduction seems to anticipate the titanic main theme from the opening movement of the Ninth. The pianist will be Evgeni Bozhanov from Bulgaria, whose reputation as a phenomenally gifted eccentric precedes him despite his young years. Another young talent is the composer Benjamin Wenzelberg, who will start by presenting his winning piece from the competition for the 2016 composition workshop «Ink Still Wet» held at the Grafenegg Campus.
