«Verdi’s best opera»? This description of the Requiem might not be as deluded as it sounds: seldom is the chasm opening into hell heard so formidably with kettledrums, trombones and trumpets; seldom is heard on earth how delicately heaven might sing. With his Requiem for the freedom-fighter Alessandro Manzoni, Giuseppe Verdi managed to create a musical spectacle that stages a visual epic of life, death and redemption in the mind of the listener. This powerful, evening-long sacred masterpiece is staged by the Tonkunstler Orchestra conducted by its Music Director Yutaka Sado with the Wiener Singverein and a selection of outstanding soloists.
