The Fifth is one of Anton Bruckner’s most fascinating and complex creations. In this work he further developed his gigantic model of the symphony by increasing the cyclical coherence while shifting the emphasis clearly into the finale and achieving its inner weight with the old arts of counterpoint – to a certain extent the unification and exaltation of the concepts of Mozart’s «Jupiter» Symphony and Beethoven’s Fifth and Ninth. Yutaka Sado has saved this work for his last season as Music Director of the Tonkunstler Orchestra: with it, he finally completes his cycle of the «mature» Bruckner symphonies nos. 3 to 9.
