Programmes

«I’m still bogged down. But I can already identify the mountain I shall certainly climb... God opens His gate for a moment, and His orchestra plays Symph. V». This was a confident Jean Sibelius in 1914, but it would take until 1919 for the definitive version of his Fifth Symphony to be completed – a powerful, uplifting work, both lyrical and dramatic. Young conductor Taichi Hiratsuka is anything but bogged down; his path up the mountain of musical life is already mapped out. At the Tonkunstler concert to mark the graduation of students at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna in May 2023, he made such an impression that he was spontaneously invited to the podium to help Albert Hosp unveil the secrets of the work.
