George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein are the two most famous figures of the world-embracing fusion of sophistication and entertainment so typical of 20th century American music. Both were the children of Russian-Jewish immigrant families and absorbed a wide variety of influences that included spirituals, ragtime, blues, and jazz; both also composed for stage and film. We also have Duke Ellington, only a half year younger than Gershwin, who influenced jazz as almost no one else. And Briton Iain Farrington, born in 1977, effortlessly takes up the laid-back sound of the Big Band: the ingredients for an evening both cool and heated-up, entirely in the realm of «Symphonic Jazz». Featuring Wayne Marshall and the versatile players of the Tonkunstler Orchestra.
