Taiko: a traditional Japanese ceremonial drum, a large, barrel-shaped or cylindrical instrument that is played with sticks and is extremely impressive in its technique and sound. «Call of Sacred Drums» is a work commissioned by the Tonkunstler Orchestra and the Grafenegg Festival and written by Estonian composer Peeter Vähi. It brings together a taiko ensemble and orchestra – and has been fascinating an international public since its premiere in 2008. Under the baton of Yutaka Sado, the work now returns to the Tonkunstler Orchestra and functions as the portal to further astonishing journeys of musical discovery: fusion of a quite special kind.
