The French composer Bruno Mantovani says he’s more than happy to do without sadness. So when he dedicates a concerto to the Scottish percussion virtuoso Colin Currie, a bold innovator, audiences are in for a sonic adventure that pulses with life! The Tonkunstler Orchestra and its Music Director Yutaka Sado present the world premiere of Mantovani's Percussion Concerto* – bowing out of the concert season with a grand hike through the Alps. A mountain tour inspired the 15-year-old Richard Strauss to produce his first sketches; years later he completed «An Alpine Symphony» as his last major orchestral work. Onwards to the summit!
As a sign of hope for the return of regular concert life by late spring 2021, this concert programme is the only one in the 20–21 season that has not (yet) been adapted to the Covid-19 prevention regulations. But naturally we cannot guarantee it will stay this way.
* Commissioned by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Tonkunstler Orchestra | premiere on 6 June 2021
