Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, opening with its ominous trumpet solo, is today one of his best-known orchestral works – and, since Luchino Visconti’s use of the Adagietto in the classic film «Death in Venice», is one of the most played. It was not always so: «The Fifth is a cursed work. No-one understands it», commented the composer after the premiere. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto in F major, K. 459, is one of the most interesting compositions in his oeuvre. This poetic masterpiece is played by the young pianist Alice Sara Ott, who makes her first appearance in a Tonkunstler subscription programme.
The finale of the orchestral suite by Tōru Takemitsu for the film «Nami no Bon» will be performed at the beginning as an Austrian premiere.
