That feeling when rhythm works its magic directly on the human body? It’s guaranteed when Peter Erskine, one of the world’s leading percussionists and a former member of the legendary jazz fusion band Weather Report, starts playing. There will be not one but two premieres to make this special Plugged-In evening perfect, with Music Director Yutaka Sado conducting. In both pieces rhythm sets the tone, and both are dedicated to the soloist. The composers are the Hungarian jazz specialist Daniel Szabo and the Armenian-born Vardan Ovsepian. The British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage once said: «What most interests me about music is its physical aspect.» And that’s the focus of his percussion concerto «Erskine», which aims almost literally to touch its audience. The Tonkunstler Orchestra rounds off the programme with the emotive Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein’s «West Side Story».
