Programmes

«O Fortuna velut Luna, statu variabilis!» Few works of 20th-century music have become as famous, or have rippled out as far, as Carl Orff’s «Carmina Burana», whose title means «Songs from Benediktbeuern». With its elemental, thrilling reinvention of a medieval-sounding music based on lyrics in Latin, Middle High German and Old French by vagrant clerics in the 13th century, the Bavarian composer developed this musical language between archaicism and modernism in 1937, and it’s lost none of its fascination to this day. Igor Stravinsky was also moved to look creatively to the past with his «Pulcinella»: Yutaka Sado conducts this gripping programme that moves from the puppet show to the whole world as a great metaphysical stage.

István Horváth has had to cancel his participation in this concert. Fortunately, Sung Min Song has agreed to take over the role.
