Rejoicing to the heavens, saddened to death: Is there another symphony that erupts with such exorbitant emotion and precipitous mood swings as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s last, the «Pathétique»? Nine days after the premiere in October 1893, the composer was dead. After a jagged opening movement, a melancholy waltz in five-four time and the positively frantic celebratory march in place of a scherzo, a slow finale full of sorrow, pain and the certainty of death has the last word. Does the work tell a story? What riddles are contained in the score? The Moscow-born Anna Rakitina is the third young conductor to work with Albert Hosp on this season’s «Explained. Experienced!» series.
