Bruno Mantovani
«Allegro Barbaro» Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra
- interval -
Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski

«The Fifth Symphony was written, despite that grievous fear that was trying to cripple the ageing man with its whispering: your song is exhausted, you’re a husk, nothing more will come from you. And lo and behold: The symphony became great, and it became good» The words of writer Klaus Mann in celebration of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s thrilling work, the second of his three great «symphonies of fate», numbers four to six. The Tonkunstler Orchestra’s Music Director Yutaka Sado complements this jewel of the orchestral repertoire with a formidable new percussion concerto. In Bruno Mantovani’s dramatic, explosive «Allegro barbaro», soloist Colin Currie scintillates on an arsenal of instruments that may not have pitch but produce brilliant sound colours.
